1. a chief priest.
2. a) the chief assistant to a bishop, especially one acting as the dean of a cathedral chapter. b) the highest ranking priest in an archdiocese among the clergy outside the cathedral chapter, especially one acting as a rural dean.
3. the highest ranking priest among the Roman Catholic secular clergy in England between 1598 and 1623.
